David Meltzer
David Meltzer is a former sports agent, chairman of the Napoleon Hill Institute, and the author of a book called Don't Do Business With Dicks.
He came on the SALTYmf GOAT Podcast to talk about that book and corrected his host inside the first minute. Brad said his goal was to make a billion people happy. Meltzer said it is over a billion, because people have spent his whole life trying to limit him and he does not let them, starting with the ones who told him he could not play college football. He went, and by his own description was a below average college football player. He thanked Brad for the platform and called it part of the mission.
Meltzer wrote Connected to Goodness, Compassionate Capitalism, Unstoppable and Game Time Decision Making, all bestsellers, none of which anyone remembers walking through an airport. He wanted to call the new one Ditch Toxicity. Simon and Schuster told him to take a risk and offend some people, because he cannot sell a secret, and the title he landed on is the one readers see and think they wish they had learned that sooner. The arithmetic behind the mission is deliberately small: empower a thousand people who each empower a thousand, and a thousand times a thousand times a thousand gets there. So he hands out his cell number and gives anyone five minutes. Twelve calls a day, seven days a week, at least an hour, and he tells people to come prepared, because his visiting time belongs to his family.
His grandfather is the one who put Think and Grow Rich in his hands. The man came through Ellis Island, survived the Depression and a bankruptcy of his own, served in World War II and lost his brother, a paratrooper, in it, and stayed an optimist through all of it until he died in his sleep at ninety seven. Meltzer says his own legacy is not what he leaves behind, it belongs to the thousand people he empowers and whatever they leave. He signs off the way he answers the phone. Be more interested than interesting.
